The Santarém School of Education (ESES) organized an International Week, from 22 to 26 April, which is a European initiative of the Comenius Association, with the collaboration of the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém, the Alexandre Herculano School Group, the Portuguese Sport and Youth Institute, throught the Lisbon Youth Centre and the Santarém City Council Tourism Service. The general objectives of this week were to give students and teachers the opportunity to contact with a different socio-cultural reality, to learn about another educational system and to discuss a subject that is of interest to them as European citizens. This week had the participation of 14 students and 6 foreign teachers from higher education institutions attending training courses for educators and / or teachers from Germany, Austria, Belgium (Flemish and Francophone), Spain and UK. There were also 5 ESES students from the degree in Social Education participating.
The theme of this international week was "European Freedom and Citizenship", with a very specific focus on issues of interculturality within the framework of European citizenship and the role of the media in building European citizenship and consolidating democracy. Students participated in various activities, such as workshops, debates, work in international groups, a visit to the historical center, a visit to Lisbon, and visits to schools of the Alexandre Herculano Group.
Lisbon Youth Centre participated in this initiative promoting a workshop on Education for Human Rights and Multiculturalism, on 22 April.
